The Cocky Anchor
Nestled in the heart of Romsey, a charming market town in Hampshire, the Cocky Anchor stands out as a cosy micropub that’s become a local favourite since opening its doors in 2021.
It’s housed in a grade II listed building that dates back to the 17th century, with extensions added in the 18th, giving it that authentic historic vibe without feeling stuffy. The place was originally part of a larger house, now split, and the pub takes up the left side.
If you’re into nautical themes, you’ll love the decor; it’s subtle but nods to the name with a seafaring touch.
Location-wise, you can’t miss it at 8 Market Place, right between the bustling market and the iconic Romsey Abbey. It’s perfect for popping in after a wander around town. Being family-run adds to the welcoming feel, and it’s dog-friendly too, so bring your furry mate along.
No need for bookings; just rock up and grab a seat. They do table service only, which keeps things relaxed, and while there’s no food on offer, you’re free to bring in snacks from nearby spots.
Inside, the layout is long and narrow with original wooden floorboards running throughout. The front area has a small curved wooden bar under a brick arch, and a passageway leads to a snug at the back with bare brick walls and a wood burner for those chillier evenings.
Out the back, there’s a large patio with tables crafted from old barrels, plus extra benches for when it’s busy. Upstairs, they’ve got a room that can hold up to 20 people, ideal for small gatherings or escaping the crowd below.
Drinks are the star here. They specialise in cask ales, lagers, ciders, gins, and rums, with a focus on quality over quantity.
One highlight is their exclusive stout, Anchor Storm, launched last November in collaboration with Bewdley Brewery. It’s a smooth blend with chocolate notes, and it’s only available at this spot and their sister pub in Worcester. Locals raved about it on launch day, and it’s become a staple for beer enthusiasts.
Opening hours are straightforward: noon to 11pm from Monday to Saturday, and noon to 10pm on Sundays. It’s a great place for a casual pint after work or on a weekend outing. There was some chatter a couple of years back about extending hours, but plans got turned down, keeping it in line with the town’s quieter pace.
Overall, the Cocky Anchor captures that classic British pub essence: unpretentious, friendly, and full of character. Whether you’re a Romsey regular or just passing through, it’s worth a visit for a laid-back drink in a historic setting.
With its community feel and unique brews, it’s easy to see why it’s earned a spot in the town’s social scene.
