The Test Way

The Test Way is a 44-mile long-distance footpath that begins high on the chalk downs at Inkpen and follows much of the course of the River Test south to Eling, where the river’s tidal waters meet Southampton Water. It is divided into eight sections, each suitable as a day walk, and is waymarked throughout.

The River Test is one of Hampshire’s finest chalk streams, known for its clear water and trout fishing. The route moves between open downs, water meadows, woodland and, in the lower reaches, tidal marshes.

Walkers pass through villages with listed buildings and historic churches, including Wherwell, Chilbolton, Stockbridge, Mottisfont and Romsey. Sections can be chosen according to energy and interest: some offer riverbank paths and picnic spots, others steeper ground with wider views or quieter stretches of woodland.

Near Stockbridge the path runs close to Longstock (main image), while the final stage from Romsey finishes at Eling, home to the tide mill.

Along the way the route crosses and recrosses the river and its carriers, giving frequent views of the water and the chance to see wildlife associated with the chalk-stream and marsh habitats. The path is generally well used and can be walked in either direction; some stretches share space with cyclists or horse-riders.

Access points are frequent. Wherwell, a short distance south-east of Andover, sits on one of the middle sections and provides a convenient starting or finishing point for walks in either direction. Public transport links and nearby villages make it possible to plan linear or out-and-back routes without needing to complete the full distance in one go.
