Rowbury Farm Camping in the Test Valley

Rowbury Farm Camping in the Test Valley

Rowbury Farm Camping occupies an 11-acre site within the Test Valley in Hampshire. The ground forms a single open field managed as a wildflower meadow, with mown pitches placed generously across the space so that campers enjoy separation rather than tight groupings.

The meadow slopes gently in places yet remains largely level underfoot. Wildflowers grow between the pitches during the season, while the perimeter borders farmland, small woods and a vineyard. Views open across adjacent fields toward the gentle contours typical of this chalk landscape. Skylarks and other farmland birds feature regularly overhead, adding to the sense of open countryside.

Pitches suit tents and small campervans up to five metres in length. No electric hook-ups exist on site, and the owners do not accept caravans or larger motorhomes. Firepits come free of charge for each pitch, encouraging evening use without the need to bring extra equipment. Water comes from a private borehole, treated through denitrification and UV processes to remain free of added chemicals.

Facilities sit in a purpose-built block near the entrance. The men’s area contains three private showers, two toilets and urinals.

Ladies have two single-occupancy shower-toilet rooms plus a separate toilet. A larger family unit provides extra space for parents with children. Hot water runs throughout. A washing-up area features two large twin-basin stands under cover, with water points and bins close by. Additional portaloo units appear at the far end of the field during busier times.

A freezer allows campers to recharge ice packs, though no fridges or on-pitch charging points exist. A shepherd’s hut sometimes opens for basic teas and coffees.

The layout keeps the site simple. Pitches scatter naturally through the meadow rather than in regimented rows, preserving the meadow character and giving a relaxed, spacious feel. The single field means everything remains within easy walking distance, yet the generous plot sizes maintain privacy between groups.

  • Accessibility: the meadow ground is mostly level with mown grass paths between pitches, suitable for standard camping equipment. Some natural undulation exists, and the rural setting means the site works best for those comfortable with grass surfaces and short walks to facilities. Wheelchair-accessible parking appears available at the entrance area.
  • Layout: one large 11-acre wildflower meadow field with scattered, well-spaced grass pitches surrounded by farmland, woods and vineyard edges.
  • Parking: guests park directly beside their pitch on the grass.
  • Local amenities: Goodworth Clatford village lies within a short distance and holds the Clatford Arms pub. The Royal Oak sits nearby as well. A 30-minute walk reaches several welcoming village pubs. Leckford Farm Shop and café operates minutes away by car, while Stockbridge and its independent shops and riverside options sit a brief drive further. The Test Valley offers chalk streams for those who enjoy fishing or quiet river paths.

The surrounding countryside provides immediate options for exploration. Footpaths leave directly from the site edges, linking into broader networks across the valley. Danebury Iron Age hillfort stands within sight and forms a popular short walk or cycle.

National cycle trails pass close by for longer routes. The cathedral cities of Winchester and Salisbury lie within reasonable driving distance, as does Stonehenge. Nature reserves and clear chalkstreams of the Test Valley add further variety for day outings without leaving the local area.

The site welcomes dogs on leads and operates as a family-friendly location with space for children to play safely in the open meadow. A relaxed atmosphere prevails, helped by the low density of pitches and the absence of bright lighting at night. Recycling facilities encourage proper waste sorting, with all rubbish taken to a depot for processing.

Rowbury Farm Camping keeps its focus on straightforward countryside camping. The combination of generous space, clean facilities and direct immersion in the Hampshire landscape makes the site a practical base for those seeking peace rather than organised entertainment.

The meadow setting changes subtly with the seasons yet retains its core appeal of open views and natural surroundings throughout the year.
