Gambledown Farm

Gambledown Farm

Gambledown Farm spreads across 270 acres of mixed farmland in Sherfield English, just outside Romsey in Hampshire. The Arnison-Newgass family has run the site for more than fifty years as a sustainable mixed operation. Arable crops support the livestock while ancient woodland forms part of the landscape and contributes to the overall character.

A resident herd of over thirty Shorthorn cattle grazes the fields alongside smaller numbers of pigs, sheep and free-range chickens. Guests often see the animals from the paths or collect fresh eggs from the dedicated enclosure. Home-grown produce and farm-reared meat appear in meals prepared on site, adding a direct link to the land.

Three barns have been converted into self-catering accommodation that blends original features with modern comforts. The Hay Barn sleeps eight and features lofty double-height spaces with underfloor heating, a full kitchen and washing facilities. The Cart Shed accommodates six people with an open-plan living area, wood-burning stove and folding doors that open onto a private lawn.

For smaller parties the Staddlestone Barn offers compact quarters for two, complete with a mini kitchen and bathroom. Each property includes private garden space with barbecue facilities and garden furniture.

Five safari-style tents occupy a separate quiet corner of the farm and overlook the Test Valley. Each tent provides three bedrooms that sleep up to six, an equipped kitchen with gas hob and cool box, and an en-suite bathroom with hot shower and flushing toilet. A log-burning stove heats the living and dining area while a front deck and fire pit sit outside. Bedding, towels and basic cooking equipment come included and dogs are welcome.

The farm layout keeps working areas separate from guest spaces yet allows easy access to open fields and woodland paths. Barns sit near the main buildings while the tents occupy a more secluded spot that maximises the views. Plenty of room exists for children to play safely outdoors and for adults to relax in the fresh air.

Key features include:

  • Accessibility: reached easily by car from the surrounding road network with Romsey station a short drive away and Southampton Airport within reasonable distance. The site suits families of all ages and welcomes dogs.
  • Layout: 270 acres of fields, woodland and working farm areas with barns positioned centrally and glamping tents set apart for privacy and valley vistas.
  • Parking: ample dedicated on-site parking for barn and tent guests.
  • Local amenities: Romsey lies a short drive away for everyday shops and pubs while the New Forest National Park sits five miles distant for walks and cycling. Winchester, Salisbury and Southampton offer broader options within easy reach.

Additional options on site include a wood-fired sauna available for hire and a function space that supports small events or retreats. Supper clubs and wood-fired pizza evenings highlight ingredients from the farm when they run. Farm-reared meat can be purchased directly by arrangement for those staying self-catering.

The combination of active farm life and comfortable accommodation gives guests a practical base for exploring southern Hampshire without leaving the countryside behind.
